Huo Xiang, also known as Patchouli or Agastache, is one of the 50 Fundamental Herbs of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is known to transform Dampness, release the exterior, and dispell Summer Heat. In Chinese Medical Theory, many ailments are caused by the invasion of an exterior pathogen, be it Heat, Wind, Cold, or something else. When an herb is said to “release the exterior” it means that the herbs coaxes the body into expelling the pathogen and so heal itself. In this case, the pathogen is often Summer Heat which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, sunstroke, and even vomiting. Patchouli works to release the exterior and aromatically calm the stomach to stop vomiting.
